Fishing Report for Canim Lake and South Cariboo

Saturday, January 24, 2009

May haMay is almost over and good old reliable June is just around the corner. I refer to June in this manner because as far as trout fishing in south central BC goes, no other month fits that description as well as June does.

May has had its ups and downs.  The weather has ranged from beautiful to downright nasty.  Along with drastic weather fluctuations came swirling unstable air masses, which brought winds from all directions.  Some lakes like Paddy and Drewry have fished well this month and lakes like Howard and Succour, which usually produce well in May, have been slow.

Canim Lake has made several anglers glad they chose to fish it for the long weekend.  For such a large lake, it really turns on early and as usual Canim provided some memorable days on the water for those who fished it.

Chironomids Galore!

These little insectual trout morsels have been popping up on most of the lakes for over a week now.  Bombers have been seen hatching on Howard, Ruth, and Donnelly Lakes just to name a few. (Bombers are big, early season chironomids found in central and southern BC - they drive the trout wild.)  Mayflies are next on the menu and some of the early season varieties have been seen hatching in warmer shallows on a few lower elevation lakes.  Dragonfly nymphs and leech patterns have been working for those who like to fish a sink tip line or slowly troll a full sink line.  Ford fenders and wedding rings are still producing plenty of trout for the gear guys.

Kokanee can be taken on both gear or flies at this time of year and lakes like Deka and Ruth have plenty of these tasty little fish.  Speaking of tasty fish, don’t forget to take some time out of your fishing day to enjoy a shore lunch.  Whether it be fresh fish or a personal favorite from home, taking the time out to enjoy the surroundings can be as rewarding as landing the big one.

That’s all for this week, and remember, the best time to go fishing is whenever you can.
